Legislators are currently discussing SB 5576, which would impose a new additional 6% tax on every booking in a short term rental (but not on hotels). We’re coordinating with the Washington Host Collaborative Alliance (WHCA) on a lobby day and rally in support of short-term rentals (STRs) at the Washington State Capitol in Olympia on Tuesday, February 18th. Your representatives need to know that hosts like you are local people sharing your home, and that the majority of your guests are also Washingtonians who would be harmed by this new tax. There’s no need to make travel more expensive in Washington.

We've invited legislators and staff to come join us for lunch. If you want to call/email your reps to make sure they know a constituent is ready to chat, you can find them at this link. It is important that legislators and staff meet hosts and hear more about how important homesharing is to you, your guests, and your community.

We have sandwiches being delivered to our tents on the north steps at noon. If you're able to speak out at the House Finance Committee hearing at 8am (don't forget to register to speak before 7am), you should stay for food!

If you’re coming from Seattle or Tacoma we’re working to provide a bus to make the trip easier.

Bus details:

Seattle Location: Northgate Transit Center East Park & RideParking lot

3rd ave NE and NE Thornton Place

Departure Time: 10:00 AM, Return Time 4:00PM

Tacoma Location: Tacoma Mall - JCPenney Parking Lot

Make Your Voice Heard: How to testify

There are three ways to provide public comment on state bills. Please plan ahead to ensure you are able to testify.

Giving Public Comments

1 | Live testimony

After the committee agenda is posted, select the “participate” button for the committee on this page; be sure you select the right date and committee.

You will be asked to fill in contact information and select the “Agenda Item” option. Then select the bill you are interested in, your position on the bill, and who you are representing. Additionally, there is a small checkmark box to select that you wish to testify during the committee hearing.

Submit the information once the bill number you wish to testify on has been added to the right side of the screen under Agenda List. You will be provided the call in number on the next page and you should also receive an email with the same information.

2 | Submit a letter

There is the option to submit a written letter as an exhibit for a committee. You can email the letters to the general committee email found on the individual committee pages here. Just select the committee who is hearing the bill you are submitting a letter on and find the email on the “overview” tab. Be sure the document is emailed in PDF form.

3 | Share your opinion

There is also a Share Your Opinion form. You will select the bill number you want to submit an opinion on. You can provide an overall position on the bill and any written comments. The form also requests contact information.

Agenda

12:00-12:00pm: Gather/Lunch
